Just before leaving Burns Lake, we get a text from Anne Ketlo: “Go to the ball diamond. All native softball tournament. Lots of people who want to talk!” And just like that, we’re headed up the road to see Fort St. John take on Lake Babine Nation.

Pipeline Politics: The Burns Lake Take
Having left Nadleh with jars of smoked salmon, huckleberry jam, and Saskatoon berry syrup, our next stop is in Burns Lake. A small town of just over 2,000 people, it’s a town still recovering from the effects of an explosion which destroyed Babine Forest Products – a wood mill which was once one of the town’s primary employers – earlier this year.
Sustaining Land: Fishing with Brian and Loretta on the Nadleh Whut’en First Nation
We meet Anne at a single-lane wooden bridge which traverses the Nadleh River. She’s asked Loretta Bird and Brian Ketlo to take us across the river in a canoe, and to show us how the Nadleh have fished for centuries.

“The Pipeline Offers Nothing But Cultural Demise” | Our Time With The Nadleh
Nadleh, home to the Nadleh Whut’en First Nation, is located just a few kilometres down the road from Katrin Maclean’s cabin. Katrin MacLean, a former hunter and forestry-worker from the area, has offered to put us up on her property for the evening. We meet her halfway between her cabin and the nearby Nadleh […]
Photo: Fraser Lake Vista
We stayed with Katrin Maclean at her cabin on the shore of Fraser Lake, downstream from many of the Enbridge pipeline’s proposed water crossings. She got us up bright and early in the morning to catch a glimpse of the sun rising over the pristine water.
“We can’t eat money. We can’t drink oil.” – Prince George Perspectives
[Text: Tomas Borsa. Photos: Tristan Becker.] It’s around 10pm and we’re nearing Prince George. Rain begins to fall. Or at least it sounds like rain; in appearance, it’s blackened buckshot which seems to harden into a gritty smudge the minute it touches the windshield. We decide it must be due to forest fires in the […]
